Twelfth Night in Aragon

Modified: December 2nd, 2007

The Year is 1504.  The Great house of Aragon celebrates 12th Night, Dia de los Tres Reyes, across Europe in their various Kingdoms.  In Spain, Ferdinand and Isabella reign, having at last made Spain a Christian Kingdom.  After the defeat of France, Ferdinand also controls the Kingdoms of Naples and Sicily.  In Bruges, daughter Juana (soon to be La Loca) rules with her husband, Arch Duke Felipe, known as The Fair.  In England, daughter Catherine has married an English Prince, Arthur, only to have him die and be newly betrothed to Crown Prince Henry.  She hopes to be Queen when he comes of age.

In this Kingdom, where Rey Andreas Eisfalke and Reina Gabriella rule, we also celebrate the 12th Night feast in Aragonese fashion, according to local custom.  In honor of the Great house of Aragon, we bid you come dressed according to the fashion of the time, be it in the land of Spain, Naples and Sicily, Bruges or England.  Should you be visiting perchance from other lands, perhaps a Moor or Jew fleeing Spain in search of a new home, you may come in those fashions also, but you may be viewed most curiously by the Court!

The Day will commence at 10:00 and Festivities will cease at 10:00 p.m.  The day will be filled with such ceremonies as are according to their Majesties' custom:  the Great Orders of Laurel, Pelican and Chivalry will meet at 12:00, 1:00 and 2:00 respectively.  Their Majesties Court shall commence forthwith, at 3:30.

To amuse the gentles and pass the day hours, we shall conduct a Fencing Tournament, have a display of Arts and Sciences to admire, and conduct a Most Charitable Auction so that Their Majesties may travel here and yon.  Please bring those items to display or donate as the season's generosity befits.  We shall amuse the Children of the Court and perchance provide a few Studies so as to start the year in a Learned Manner.

There shall be a light day's repast provided for those who wish to purchase it, starting at noon.  The Great Feast, in the custom of Aragonese dining, shall commence after their Majesties Court – 120 guests shall sit above the salt (on-board), with 64 invited to sit below the salt and provide their own repast (off-board).  The food shall be according to the tastes of the time, but influenced by Spain.  We promise enough fare to satisfy the hungry palates of those attending, without pause for boredom and delay. For 24 children, Three Special Tables shall be provided, with tastes and amusement that suit their tender palates.

A call for Subtleties is sent forth to all talented Cookes in the land, and these shall be displayed during the day, and for a token the best shall be chosen by all those Barons and Baronesses who have naught better to pass the time than to spend it judging frivolous but beautiful pursuits.

Entertainment is sought for the Feast to amuse their Majesties and the Court.  Festive singing of the time will be done together, by seeking a list of songs from the Autocrat, all may join in who may know these melodies.  We seek voices strong and true.  If there be other talents within the Crowd, be it music, dancing, acrobatics, comedy and farce – make it known to the Autocrat in advance that we may have you perform.  The style that is in keeping with Aragonese fashion is most pleasing.

After the Feast and Entertainment, and if Time shall allow, the floor will be cleared to make way for Dancing.  After such we shall bid all Buenas Noches.
