Open officer position: Baronial Seneschal
This officer position will NOT be changing over until early December (likely at Yule). The months between now and then will be for learning and training for the role.
As this is a position of leadership, please be advised that the Seneschal is the legal representation for the Barony. Your first and greatest duty is to adhere to Society Corpora, the Laws of the East Kingdom, and the Baronial Customs and Financial Policy.
Requirements to apply:
You must be at least 18 years old
You must be a paid member of the SCA for the duration of your term of office. Any lapse in membership will result in removal from office
You must reside within the boundaries of the Barony, as defined by the zip codes registered with the Kingdom Seneschal’s Office. Your mailing address will be considered proof of residence in most cases. Anyone who knowingly provides a false residence in order to hold office will be subject to administrative sanctions.
Responsibilities:
• Read and uphold Corpora, Kingdom Law, and Baronial Custom
• Attend Kingdom Curia as a representative and voice of the members of the Barony
• Submit quarterly reports to the Regional Seneschal covering all local activity for the previous three-month period
• As the legal representative of the Barony, attend all Baronial events or designate a deputy when you are unable to do so
• Review and sign all contracts
• Work with event stewards to ensure all policies and laws are followed and advise as needed
• Act as a second signatory on the bank account, and sign checks as needed
• Review and sign all Exchequer reports and bank statements quarterly
• In coordination with the Baronial Exchequer, chair the Financial Committee by compiling topics of discussion, scheduling meetings as needed, and report on Committee activity at Baronial meetings
• Schedule and chair monthly Baronial meetings
• Ensure the Barony has the necessary warranted officers, and facilitate the election and warranting of new ones
• Confirm Baronial officers are meeting all requirements set forth for them
• Answer communications promptly and check official email regularly
• Resolve low-level disputes, or report disputes up the chain of command as needed
• Maintain good communications with the seneschals of neighboring branches
• Run pollings for selection of new Baronial seats or other reasons as needed
• Have a deputy to assist and stand in your stead when needed (at least one. You are allowed to appoint deputies for as many support tasks as you need beyond that)
This is not an all-inclusive list of the duties, but covers many of them. The job is a lot of work, but is also deeply rewarding in knowing that the members of our group have a place to call home. The workload ebbs and flows based on whether there are events in the works or changes in policy at any level. There are MANY resources available, along with fellow and former seneschals at the Local, Regional, and Kingdom level who are capable of providing guidance and assistance when needed.
The transition will not happen until Yule in December, so there is plenty of time to learn and get acclimated to the various responsibilities.
This position is required to be able to be any type of group, whether Barony or Shire. As long as you are willing to learn, you can learn to do the job. Do not let lack of experience or knowledge hold you back from applying.
Please submit letters of intent to seneschal@bbm.eastkingdom.org, baron@bbm.eastkingdom.org, and baroness@bbm.eastkingdom.org by 11:59pm Sunday June 7th, so we may present applicants to vote on at the Baronial Business meeting on June 11th.
